How does microwave work

The microwave heats your food without getting hot itself. It does this through radiation, the same way as the sun heats your body.

Microwave ovens use high-frequency electromagnetic waves generated by magnetrons. The same as that of TV and radio, these are very small and hence the name ‘Micro’. Although the waves are small they carry enormous amounts of energy.

These are absorbed by the food particles, causing the particles to vibrate. This vibration leads to heating of the food particles. Microwaves do this without heating the surrounding air or oven itself.

Although the same is not true for convection and grill ovens. Convection oven uses a heating element and a fan, this fan circulates hot air inside the oven and cooks it evenly. Now this is very different from natural microwave ovens, which use microwaves. Whereas convection uses heat and fan.

Grill ovens are similar to that of convection but differ in the fact that Oven toaster grills(OTG) have a coil for heating and a thermostat that controls the heat.

Microwave oven can be used for basic heating, convection can be used for baking and OTG for grilling.

Types of microwave oven

There are three types of microwave ovens and they are:

1.Solo Microwave

2.Convection Microwave Oven

3.Grill Or Oven toaster and Grill.

Solo Microwave

Solo microwave ovens are entry level microwave ovens which solely use microwave radiation, this type of microwave ovens are basic and can only be used for basic heating and cooking. Solo microwaves are cheapest and come with limited auto cook options. They usually range between 14-17Litres and some even 20L.

Consider a Solo Microwave if you are a small family or bachelor and if you need only reheating operation.

Grill Microwave

As the name suggests, this microwave is used to grill food items. Mainly chicken, pork beef and others.

These types of ovens use heating coils that generate the heating effect and also provide the flavor of the coal from traditional or outdoor grills. They are also known as Oven toaster grills(OTG).

They are slightly higher priced than solo, but have multi functions such as grilling, toasting, and can also be used for reheating.

Consider an OTG if you want to make toasts, pizzas and grilling meat.

Convection Microwave Oven

These are higher end ovens that combine both solo microwaves and OTG. They consist of a heating element and a fan. The fan blows hot air around the cavity thereby heating the food.

Convection microwaves have auto cook functions, and usually have a variety of options for cooking. The fan or blower allows the food to heat or cook faster than a Solo microwave. And these ovens are mainly used for baking, the even distribution of heat makes it more suitable for baking.

These ovens also have heating coils and can be used for grilling. Therefore performing Reheating, baking and grilling operations.

The downside of a convection oven is its price, although with evolving technology and production, the price has relatively come down.

Consider a convection if you have a large family and if you want to bake, cook food, grill and others.

Difference Between OTG, Microwave, Convection, Grill

The difference between all these types of ovens is the usage or utility.

Cakes and Brownies

Let’s go broadly into the functions that an oven performs, what they mean and how is it done.

The most basic function that is needed in a microwave is reheating leftovers or just reheating food. This function is available in all variants of oven, be it solo, grill, convection and OTG.

Another important and a very popular function. Grilling food items give you a unique taste which is very popular. This function is mainly available in OTG and convection ovens. There are heating coils that help in the heating process.

Toasting function helps in toasting the bread and also preparing pizza. So if you want to make your favourite pizzas do consider OTGs.

When you store vegetables and meat in the freezer for longer shelf life, it requires to be thawed i.e to get rid of the ice and make it warm. This function allows the food items to get back to their normal temperature and get rid of the ice accumulated.

This function is usually present in all variants of microwave ovens.

The most favourite function among people is baking Be it cakes, brownies and breads this function does all. Consider the baking function in your microwave if you do regular baking. The only variant that does this is a convection oven, which has a heating element and a fan/blower. This fan circulates the heat evenly which is very much a requirement in baking.

Coming to features, Microwaves ovens have various features that help us in day to day life.

Auto-Cook Function

In this feature, you will get pre set menus or pre set temperatures that are best suitable for certain dishes. You have to just select one of the preset programs, enter the weight of the contents and you are done. The oven will set the temperature and also the time.

This feature will help you if you do not know the required temperature for a certain dish.

Child Lock

The child lock is another safety feature that prevents children from pressing unwanted buttons on the microwave. This is a very good feature if you have kids around and prevents any accidents.

Although this feature is quite common now, some Solo Microwave Ovens do not have them and some do.

Usage/type of panel

Type of panel here refers to the control panel that enables you to control settings in the Oven. High end convection ovens have touch panels that are easy to operate and also feel premium.

But these do have their disadvantage, the touch panels come at a high replacement cost. If the touch panel stops working replacing them would cost you a bomb.

Regular maintenance and safe usage would ensure that longer life of the panels.

But then, some companies give warranties that include the touch panels and dials. So feel free to consider them as they look and feel premium.

Conventional Ovens have had significance in cooking for centuries. Ovens made up of brick and wood which were used before are still used for their authentic taste and quality.

Microwave Oven was invented during World War II by an American Engineer Percy Spencer. These are not only used for heating leftovers as it is generally thought of. It has many uses, read on to know.

If you are someone who is planning to buy or even bought a new microwave then this ultimate guide on how to use microwave oven is for you. Read this guide if you are a beginner and we also have some expert tips, jump over to the tips section to find them.

How does a microwave oven work?

Before using a microwave oven we need to know its basic working. The microwave heats your food without getting hot itself. It does this through radiation, the same way as the sun heats your body.

Microwave ovens use high-frequency electromagnetic waves.

Types of Microwave Ovens

Solo Microwave Oven

Solo Microwaves are ovens that are basic models and are cheaper. These ovens are entry-level models that are mostly used for heating leftovers. They can also be used for defrosting, and other basic cooking.

Grill Microwave oven

As the name suggests grill microwaves are for grilling meat, veggies, pizza, and others. These have heating coils that help in grilling and toasting. If you have a grill microwave then I am sure it requires a lot of cleaning and maintenance. Jump over to cleaning section to get some cleaning tips.

Convection Microwave oven

Convection ovens are sophisticated ovens that perform all the cooking functions that you need in your kitchen. Convection ovens have fans that circulate the air throughout, cooking the food uniformly. Baking bread, cakes, and brownies can all be done in this type of oven.

Microwave Oven vs Convection oven

Convection is a type of oven that uses a different heating method than that of a microwave. Convection ovens use a heating element and a fan that circulates the heat throughout.

Convection ovens cook food faster and more evenly than microwave ovens and hence considered to be better than them. Although there are combinations of both in the market, Microwave convection ovens. Which uses both the heating element and microwaves to heat the food. This guide addresses to all the types of ovens.

And it is a myth that microwaves cook food from inside out and convection the other way round.

Setting up a microwave oven before using

Before using a microwave oven there are some important factors to keep in mind.

You must go through the instructions manual. These are provided by the manufacturer for important stuff that you need to follow. Also these instructions change with the product.

Setting up the oven

The microwave oven must be placed on flat surfaces. Also ensure you have a designated place in the kitchen which is dry and clean. And ensure it is near a plug socket for the electric connection, as frequent moving of the oven can be tedious.

The socket must not be generally used by other appliances. Also make sure that you do not use an adapter or an extension cord for electric connection. The turntable provided is to be placed properly inside the oven, as per instructions.

Now as the microwave is set up, let’s look at the Preheating aspect.

Preheating(why, how, when and how long)

Preheating the microwave oven is like heating a pan before cooking or frying. The preheating process ensures that the oven reaches a certain temperature before you cook. Preheating is generally done for baking and grilling. As a cold oven can take time to reach the desired temperature levels and hence affect the cooking.

The preheating process is easy and requires you to switch on the baking mode(or set the temperature). Set a timer as per your need and start.

Preheating is usually carried out for 10-15 minutes, depending upon the model. Older models need more time and new ovens available in the market heat faster. They also need less time to reach the desired temperature. Usually, the temperatures required are in the range of 200-300 degrees Celsius.

Do’s and don’ts of Microwave Oven

A microwave oven is an electrical appliance that requires care. I have included some dos and don’ts that you must take into consideration.

  • Use the microwave in a clean place.
  • Preheat the oven as and when required.
  • Clean the microwave frequently(Once or twice in a week); Use a clean damp cloth, soaked in detergent or just water. Clean the transparent glass after every use.
  • Read and follow instructions as per instructions manual(manual is your bible)
  • Use microwave-safe containers. For example ceramic, glass and other microwave-safe plastic containers(labeled by manufacturers)
  • Stir the food as necessary, heat the food for a minute or two and remove it to check if it’s warm enough, if not stir the food and reheat it for another minute.

  • Do not overstuff the oven with food, only heat what is needed; Overstuffed oven could lead to uneven cooking and thereby wasted energy.
  • Do not put the food inside the oven uncovered, always cover the food with a plastic cover that is microwave safe. This could avoid splattering.
  • Do not open the oven for repairs if you are not an expert.
  • Do not use the oven for experiments. Use it safely and with guidance from experts and elders.

Uses of Microwave Oven

I always believed that if you want to heat your leftover food quickly then you gotta get a microwave. Well, the microwave ovens that are available now in the markets are much more advanced and do a lot more than just heating the leftovers.

Reheating leftovers, warming butter, chocolate, and coffee are also the most common uses of the oven.

Cooking food

Microwave can cook food too, be it dessert, chocolate peanut butter cake, to traditional Indian curries, the microwave does it all.

Boiling, blanching, roasting, and steaming food items are some of the common cooking options that you can get with a microwave oven. New microwaves have different presets for specific recipes and are heavily marketed by companies.

Baking is another popular use of a microwave oven and hence is used to bake cakes, cookies, and bread. Baking cakes find a popular use as many including me and you love cakes and pastries. The microwave makes it easy to bake these cakes and need very little time to bake. Another favorite being pizza comes under baking.

You can roast your favorite nuts easily in the microwave. Just pop some nuts into the microwave and set a timer of 15-30 seconds, stop and repeat until your kitchen fills up with the aroma of roasted nuts.

Similarly, spices can be easily roasted and are faster than the stove.

Blanching is a process of putting the vegetables in boiling water and running the vegetables through cold water immediately after. Thereby allowing peeling of the skin of the fruits and vegetables easily. Tomatoes can be blanched easily in the microwave and need half of the time.

Defrosting as the name suggests is freeing the vegetables, meat from accumulated ice. In other words thawing.

Some microwaves have a preset option of defrosting and do well in doing so. Reducing all the water running and endless wait for melting of the ice.

There are many other uses of microwave ovens and you will be shocked by some and wonder if you could actually use a microwave for this.

  • Warming hair oils

Microwave with instant heating can warm up your oil instantly without a fuss and warm oil is considered best for the scalp.

  • Bringing back the crunch in chips and mixtures

Microwave ovens are best in crunching back the potato chips and mixtures that must have taken in some moisture. Place the chips in a towel in the microwave and switch it on for 30 seconds. The towel soaks up all the moisture and voila your crunchy chips are back!

  • Decrystallizing Honey

Place the crystallized honey in the microwave for 30 seconds and your honey is back in its true form.

A microwave oven comes with many functionalities and let’s look at some of the most important ones and its uses.

By far the most important and basic functionality is the Timer. The timer allows you to set the time interval for your cooking and usually the timer is preset to a minimum of 15-30 seconds. It lets you set and forget, without you worrying about the food burning or wastage of energy. Always use a timer to set a designated time for a particular recipe.

Microwave Presets(Auto Cook)

Presets are nothing but timers that are designed for specific dishes and recipes, you just have to select the recipe and the weight. The microwave then will automatically set the power and cooking time. Feel free to use this function and enjoy delicious dishes.

Wherein the oven is started empty for it to reach the desired temperature that is needed for the recipe. Usually carried out for cakes, cookies, and grilling.

Melting the ice from the frozen meat or vegetables, ovens have preset functions for defrosting. Defrosting with a click of a button.

Child Lock

Child lock makes your microwave-safe around children. This function disables the buttons. And if your kid clicks on a button it will not take in that command until you disable the lock. A very helpful functionality if the kids are around.

There are many other functionalities such as steaming, which helps you steam/simmer your food. Specially noodles, rice, and vegetables. Cooking power can also be controlled using the oven wherein it allows you to set the power levels from 10-90%.

Some premium models have turntable off functionality. In which you can stop the turntable from turning, this is usually ‘on’ by default.

+30 Seconds button adds in extra seconds. that controls your cooking time, use this function when you know that your food needs an increase in cooking time, to get perfectly cooked food.

Suitable cookware

Like most kitchen appliances, a microwave oven must be used with care. Before you heat the food or defrost you have to use microwave safe cookware. Regular cookware that does not microwave safe may harm the food and in turn you.

Microwave cookware is one that can sustain the microwaves and not get affected. The material should not get deformed, become too hot or release chemicals upon heating. The microwaves must pass through the cookware and heat the food.

Microwave safe materials are ceramic, glass, special plastic bowls, and paper. These allow the microwaves to pass through and heat the food. Not all ceramics are safe, stoneware and porcelain are considered to be safe. Although the metallic paints used in certain porcelain cannot be used as it may cause sparks. Even paper(plates) and napkins must be microwave safe.

To check whether material is microwave safe, place a cup of water and the cookware you want to test in the microwave. Run the microwave for a few seconds and check if the cookware gets too hot, if it does then it’s unsafe.

The shape of the cookware also affects the cooking. A square-shaped container may get the food overcooked, hence round shaped containers or plates are the best.

Microwave Cooking Tips

Microwave cooking is different and it is a skill. Here are a few tips that will make your job easy.

  • Power setting

When you start the microwave without any power setting, it will be in a high power setting by default. Use the power settings as per the need. For example, cooking meat would require you to use 100% power, whereas defrosting will only need 30-40% of power setting.

When you say 30-40% power setting it means that the heating is on for 30% of the time.

  • Work with your microwave

By working I mean is you gotta know your microwave well, its power, setting, auto cook, and others. You have to experiment with your microwave, try different recipes and dishes, and get familiar with your new microwave. It takes time and ample dishes for you to completely understand your microwave. Give it time and you will see it become your best kitchen companion.

  • Use water for more moisture

This one is an expert tip wherein you place a wet or moist towel or paper into the microwave with your food to add in some extra moisture. You can raise that a bit by using a glass of water but be careful of superheated water.

  • Arranging foods accordingly

It is always advisable to arrange your food at the edges or shape it like a ring with open space between. This would allow your food to cook evenly. Keeping the bowl full of leftovers on the edge of the turning plate would also ensure even heating.

  • Stir, Turn, rotate, repeat.

When working with a microwave, take in mind to constantly stir, turn, and rotate the food for uniform heating. You can divide this at equal intervals or as you feel comfortable.

  • Thinner the food the better cooking

Microwave finds it tougher to penetrate thicker foods, instead, you can cut it down into pieces and allow the microwave to heat.

Safety of Microwave Oven

There are certain things that you must take care to ensure that you use the microwave safely. Protecting yourself and the environment around you.

  • Using the right cookware

I know this point is stressed a lot and hence it is very important to use microwave-safe utensils and cookware. Look for microwave safe sign.

  • Avoid sharper metal objects

Avoid putting sharper metal objects into the microwave as it would cause a spark and hence a fire or explosion.

  • Avoid sealed foods

Sealed packaged food directly into the microwave will cause it to explode and harm the appliance. Instead, empty the food into a microwave-safe bowl and then microwave it.

  • Superheated water

Avoid heating the water into the microwave for more than two minutes. Above which the water may get superheated and can splatter the walls of the oven, damaging it.

  • Free environment

Make sure you don’t place anything on top of the oven because this is where all the heating takes place, or place it near a hot surface. It would result in microwave overheating and hence damaging.

Cleaning Microwave oven

I have made this a section itself because many do not consider cleaning their microwaves a thing. But if the appliance is dirty with splattered food inside and the dust settled outside, it needs cleaning.

The key to keeping microwaves from dirt and smell is regular maintenance. A gentle wipe after every use works wonders and if not weekly cleaning is essential.

  • With a lemon

Lemon is best for getting rid of smell and bacteria. Take a microwave-safe bowl, squeeze a lemon or lime slice and then start the oven for a minute or until steam forms. Let the steam rest for 2 minutes and then wipe the inside of the oven with a sponge or damp cloth.

  • Vinegar

Repeat the same step as above using a dash of vinegar instead of lemon.

  • Baking Soda

If your microwave oven smells a lot then you can also consider baking soda. Add a teaspoon of baking soda into a microwave-safe bowl containing water and microwave the solution until the steam forms. Clean it using a damp cloth after a while.

For tough stains or grease, make a baking soda paste and apply it to the greasy area. Clean off the paste with a damp cloth.

Cleaning outside is easy with a damp cloth, preferably soaked in soap water or dishwashing liquid.

Using a microwave is not a complex thing, but it needs your time and patience. Try different recipes with a microwave and find your perfect settings for it. You will learn more about your microwave as you go along. And most important is cleaning, remember to keep the microwave clean and hygienic.

Symphony Diet 12t Review- Comparing symphony Diet 12t vs 12i and others.

diet 22i review

In this article we will be carrying out Symphony Diet 12t review, with the review we will also be comparing it with diet 12i, 22i, and others in the range. And some frequently asked questions that people ask.

Symphony 12t is the #2 bestseller on Amazon after the Bajaj Platini px97. It is a diet cooler that uses blower for the airflow and is suitable for personal cooling.

If you want a cooler for your study room or your single bedroom then this is your best buy. Best for bachelors and single room cooling.

Symphony diet 12t has a capacity of 12 liters and also has ice chambers to add in ice cubes for better cooling. The only concern in this cooler is its limited capacity and sound which is higher.

Read further to find detailed review of symphony diet 12t air cooler.

The air cooler houses a 170 Watt blower, made up of a plastic body that is quite sturdy. The performance of the blower is good and throws air up to 6 feet. The cooling performance is also good and some may find it satisfactory depending upon the temperature and humidity in the region.

This symphony air cooler is suitable for a room size of 100 square feet as recommended by the company, but then consider this cooler only if you require it for room size of not more than 80 sq ft. It is best for small shops that require spot cooling and study rooms for bachelors or students.

Coming to the cooling performance, it does give average cooling when run on normal water and enhances it when you use ice cubes. Therefore use ice for greater cooling.

Symphony Diet 12t cooler has a blower, which is powerful and performs well for its capacity. It also consumes less power but certainly not less than a fan(in the cooler)

Cooling Pads

The personal cooler has Honeycomb pads which are known to provide good cooling and are efficient. It has only one-sided honeycomb pads unlike Bajaj Platini PX97, which has pads on three sides.

Symphony Diet 12t uses a unique technology of purifying the air that it takes in using the Multistage filtering system.

The Multistage filtering system filters the air through dust filter, smell filter, allergy filter, bacteria filter and finally wash filter. When you look at the back of the air cooler you can only see a dust filter and you wonder where the other filters are.

Then you see the three debit card-sized filters attached at the bottom side of the dust filter, we wonder if they could do all that the company claims.

The dust filter is good as it avoids mosquitoes from coming inside the pads and also maintains hygiene conditions.

The water tank in the air cooler is of 12-liter capacity. The capacity is good enough for a diet cooler and 12t is a basic model in this range. The name 12t is also due to the capacity of the water tank, where 22t means 22 liters.

The cooler lasts 5-6 hours with continuous running and a full tank. There is a hole at the bottom of the tank which most of them miss and is used to drain out the excess water.

Symphony Diet coolers are all good in terms of portability and have a good set of castor wheels. The lighter the air cooler better would be the portability.

Which is why this cooler is #2 bestseller in portability factor.

Diet 12t is good in terms of design and build, it looks good and takes up very little space.

Do not go by the picture and consider this as a big or long tower cooler, which is what people expect and get disappointed. This is a small personal air cooler that comes up to your waist.

Therefore if you sleep on the bed which is at a certain height you will have to keep the cooler at a certain distance and also direct its blades upwards using the lever given.

Since the air cooler uses a blower the air flows only from one side of the vent blade. Some users may find this odd and may get disappointed.

Do not worry about the vent size as the blower’s airflow is quite good and compensates for the size.

Coming to maintenance aspects the maintenance of the cooling pads is generally easy though the removal of honeycomb pads is a tough task in this cooler and requires you to unscrew many screws behind the cooler.

The dust filter is easy to clean and maintain. Ensure that you clean the dust filter every week and the whole air cooler once a month. You may find fluoride deposits due to water used, which if not cleaned would result in a foul metallic smell.

Ice chamber

Yes, it does have an ice chamber to put ice cubes for greater cooling. The cooling is hence dependent upon the ice

Inverter Capability

Inverter capable air coolers are really a good addition to people who get frequent power cuts and this Symphony Diet 12t does come with it.

  • Powerful Blower
  • Attractive Design
  • Best for Single person
  • Best for study room and small bedrooms
  • Ice Chamber a good addition
  • Inverter Capable
  • Good build quality
  • Takes up less space
  • Sound on the higher side
  • Cooling is dependent upon Ice
  • Only spot cooling possible
  • Not for large rooms
  • Size of the cooler is small hence may disappoint some.

Is it worth it?

This is the best air cooler if you are looking to have a cooler for yourself or single rooms that are around 80 sq ft. Consider the cooler if your requirement is for study rooms and bachelor rooms.

It has a good capacity that lasts up to your complete sleep in the night, and requires cross ventilation for efficient cooling and draining out the excess moisture in the air. It looks good and is sure to enhance the decor of your room. A good cooler for the humid climate as it has a blower and does spot cooling well.

The concerns are the sound and dependency of cooler on ice to provide good cooling. Consider these factors before purchasing the cooler.

Also read Air Cooler Buying Guide.

The Bajaj Platini PX97 air cooler comes with 100 Watt fan that is made up of high-quality plastic material which creates less noise and is also lighter in weight.

Bajaj claims that the air cooler has 30 feet air throw, this is a very tall claim for the cooler of this size and actual usage sees a reduced number of around 15-20 feet. For a small to medium size room, the air throw is powerful. It has a CFM of 2000-1500 cubic meters/hr of airflow, which is quite good for this range.

The performance of the air cooler over time depends on your usage. There are some ways in which you can keep your cooler in good condition.

The castor wheels are sturdy and easy to move This is an important factor to consider before buying this cooler compared to an AC. The Air-condition system is room-specific and only cools a single room.

Design and Build Quality

This room cooler is made up of thermoplastic material that feels average quality and you have to be careful when you move the cooler around not to hit against the wall or any other object. Some users found that the joints that are made up of plastic material leave gaps.

As it uses honeycomb cooling pads the cooler requires negligible maintenance, except for frequent water changes and cleaning. The water must be changed every 3-4 days or else you will start getting foul smell from the air cooler.

Inverter Capability

The air cooler consumes very little power as it is of low wattage, making it suitable for Inverter. A very important feature especially if you experience frequent power cuts in your region.

Air Cooler Buying Guide-How to choose Air Cooler for your home and outdoors

When you think of buying an Air Cooler for your home, do you get confused looking at plethora of air coolers in the market? Well you are not alone, this struck me last year during summer and i found that there were very less guides that actually helped me in buying one. I had to research a lot and finally got one, which perfectly fit my needs.

In this Air cooler Buying guide i will give the very exact research i had to go through and help you understand your needs and also help you keep your air cooler in good condition, as many of them ask how to keep air cooler from smelling? Read along to find out.

How does cooler work?

Air cooler works on evaporative cooling wherein fan/blower pulls in air from outside and passes through cooling pads which are soaked with water. Which evaporates and thereby cools the air passing through it. Therefore most of the performance of the cooler depends on Cooling pad, fan/blower and capacity of the cooler.

How to choose Air Cooler for your home and outdoors

There are many factors that lead to choosing perfect air cooler, and these are:

  1. Type of Cooler
  2. Size of your Room
  3. Storage Capacity
  4. Type of Climate you live in
  5. Fan/Blower
  6. Type of cooling pad

Comprehensive Air cooler Buying Guide

Type of Cooler

There are mainly three types of coolers.

  1. Personal
  2. Dessert
  3. Tower

Personal Coolers are air coolers that are used for small to medium rooms and are of 15-30 litres, there are some even higher. These are mostly preferred for humid weather condition, and have lower power consumption and also low sound.

If you are living in a humid area, require cooling of small to medium sized room and also have a fixed budget then consider Personal Cooler.

Desert coolers are more of higher capacity mainly in the range of 30-50 Litres. These can also be used for outdoors and terrace. Desert air coolers use fan for providing the air flow and are preferred in dry climate regions and they cool medium to large rooms easily.

If you live in a dry and hot climate conditions and need cooling in large rooms or outdoors then consider Dessert Air Cooler.

Tower air coolers are similar to personal air coolers but only differ in design and aesthetic appeal. Tower air coolers look better and are most portable air coolers. These are the most popular coolers and are trending in the market.

If you are looking for a sleek and good looking personal cooler, also need your cooler to acquire less space then consider Tower coolers.

tower cooler

There are other types of air coolers like window cooler, similar to an AC it is fitted to a window or wall and occupies no floor space.

window cooler

Size of your room

The first thing that should come up before buying an Air Cooler is the room in which you want your air cooler to be in. Suppose you want the air cooler for your hall, a hall is biggest room in most of the houses and hence would require a larger air cooler(Desert). Similarly a bedroom would require a personal air cooler.

Most of the air coolers have the area or size mentioned in their specifications, where it fits best. Always consider buying air cooler that cools larger room size than what you plan to buy as it would allow you to use it effectively in quieter condition, resulting in low power consumption and less noise.

If you do not know the size of your room and want to measure it easily, refer to FAQ’s down below.

Storage Capacity

This is water storage capacity, as air cooler uses water for cooling, it is an important consideration.

Larger the air cooler larger would be the storage capacity, hence there must be an optimum capacity that must suit your needs. The storage capacity ranges from 10-50 litres or more. Personal air coolers are more in the range of 15-30 litres. Whereas desert has range of 30-55 litres.

Type of Climate you live in

Humid Weather

Usually in humid weather where the air has more water content the air cooler may require more of a blower than a fan for air flow. Personal air coolers usually have blower and are perfect for humid conditions.

But then extreme humid conditions the Air cooler may not work at all, hence avoid purchasing an air  cooler if you live in extreme humid conditions.

Dry Weather

Evaporative coolers function well in dry weather conditions as it is perfect condition for a water to evaporate and cool. For these conditions a desert cooler is best buy

If you live in hot and dry regions then Desert Coolers should be your pick.

The air flow of the cooler depends on whether it uses a fan or a blower. Fans produce large volumes of air with low pressure, thus suitable for large rooms or even outdoors. Blowers produce high volume of air with high pressure, which is why they are used in personal or tower coolers.

Airflow of the air cooler is usually measured in CFM(Cubic Feet per Minute). Which can be measured by (size of room*height )/2, where size of room is in square feet. Suppose 180 square feet is size of your room and height is 10 feet. (180*10)/2 gives you 900 CFM. That is, your 180 Sq ft room needs an air cooler that gives out 900 CFM of air.

Type of cooling pad

Cooling pads are main component of cooler, these are the ones that provide cooling. Cooling pads absorb water and allow air to flow through them.

There are two types of cooling pads:

Cellulose Cooling pad

These are more like honeycomb design and are thicker. These are low maintenance pads that are slightly higher in price but are known for their efficiency.

Aspen are made up of synthetic fibre and wood shavings. They are cheaper than cellulose but have a shorter life and are high in maintenance.

Miscellaneous Features

Remote Control

Some coolers come with remote control feature that helps you control the speed, direction and others without having to change its settings again and again.

Air coolers that work on inverter

Consider buying these if you have frequent power cuts and use inverter for backup. This one particularly has helped me during summer when there are frequent power cuts and when I desperately needed an air cooler.

A portable cooler is best when you do not have a designated place to keep the cooler. I usually take the cooler to the bedroom during the night. Hence portability should be a priority if you want to use the cooler for cooling say your bedroom and also the hall.

With this we come with an end to Air Cooler buying guide, purchase one that suits your room size and your requirements. There will be some that will meet your expectations and some which will not. Therefore always focus on the main aspects which would satisfy your need.

We have also mentioned some Frequently asked questions that one gets before buying air cooler, do give it a look.

Frequently asked questions

1.How to keep air cooler from smelling?

The water in cooler when kept for many days develops a strange musty smell. To prevent your air cooler from smelling, regularly clean your air cooler and drain out the water in the cooler. Also clean the cooling pads to prevent any fungus formation which may result in foul smell.

Replace the cooling pads if the problem persists.

1.AC vs Cooler. Which is better?

AC and Cooler are both different machines, both have some advantages and disadvantages. Air conditioners recycle the same air in the room and cool it, whereas air cooler takes in fresh air and cools it down.

When we consider cooling, an AC provides far greater cooling than an air cooler. But it comes with a price, as the Air Condition system consumes a lot of power. We also know that AC uses refrigerants that harm the environment, hence we should always look for an eco-friendly option.

3. How does cooler work?

We have answered this question in the section of the air cooler buying guide.

4. How to measure your room size? to get the best air cooler for your room.

Most of the coolers in the market have room capacity mentioned in the description, usually in Square feet. If you do not know the size then you can follow the steps below:

With Measuring tape

Measure the length and breadth of the room in feet and multiply them to get the size of your room(in square feet). Do not have a measuring tape? Not to worry we got you covered.

Without measuring tape

Use your foot, walk toe to heel across the length and breadth of the room. The average length of the Indian foot is around 9-10 inches. Note down the number of steps you take and multiply by 10 to get in inches, and finally multiply by 0.08 to get in feet.

Suppose you take 10 steps along the length of the room and take 8 steps along the breadth of the room .

Length: 10 steps*10 inches= 100 inches*0.08 ft = 8ft.

Breadth: 8 steps*10 inches= 80 inches*0.08 ft = 6.4ft.

Multiply the length and breadth to get in Square feet. Here we have 51 Square feet.Hence you need a room cooler that cools 51 sq ft of room or more.

You do not have to be dead accurate on this and estimate is more than enough.
